Schiaperelli

At the V&A, Schiaparelli is presented not simply as fashion, but as a dialogue between disciplines — where clothing intersects with art, movement and modern life.
When Elsa Schiaparelli opened her house in 1928 on rue de la Paix, she began with pour le sport — designing practical, modern pieces for an evolving way of life. From this foundation, her work expanded into couture that challenged convention, balancing utility with imagination.

Central to this shift was her collaboration with artists including Man Ray and Picasso, as well as the Surrealists — bringing new ideas, symbolism and wit into the language of dress.

Schiaparelli redefined what a wardrobe could be — creative and culturally connected.
