Antique Black Velvet & Beaded Reticule, c.1900

An exceptionally decorative antique reticule dating to around the turn of the 20th century.

Constructed in black velvet, the softly gathered body is densely worked with glass bead embroidery in scrolling, almost architectural formations. Rows of beadwork articulate the upper edge, while the original fabric handles retain the softly collapsed character of the piece.

The extraordinary density of the handwork gives the surface an almost three-dimensional quality, with the black ground allowing the individual beads to catch the light.

A particularly sculptural example of the small evening bags that developed from the 19th-century reticule.
