An exceptional antique hand fan by J. Duvelleroy, Paris, presented in its original fitted retailer’s box. Finely constructed with exquisitely worked Brussels lace over tortoiseshell sticks and guards, the fan is richly decorated with beads and sequins and intricate needle lace of remarkable delicacy.

Founded in Paris in 1827, Duvelleroy became the pre-eminent maker of luxury fans, supplying European courts and some of the most fashionable women of the nineteenth century. Today, surviving examples bearing the Duvelleroy name are prized for both their craftsmanship and historical significance.

Fans by Duvelleroy brought together the finest specialist makers of their day. Brussels lace—among the most prized handmade laces in Europe—was worked entirely by hand before being mounted onto beautifully polished tortoiseshell. The result was an object intended not simply as an accessory, but as an expression of craftsmanship, refinement and status.

Retaining its original presentation box, this example offers a rare glimpse into the world of late nineteenth-century French luxury.
