Victorian Black Silk Fan

A Victorian black silk folding fan with decorated guards and a restrained monochrome palette. The object is delicate but graphic, held by rhythm, pleat and line.

The silk leaf is folded across fine ribs, with decorative gold embroidery thread work concentrated through the guards. Its construction depends on repetition and tension — each fold forming part of the overall movement.

Black fans were often associated with formal evening and mourning dress during the Victorian period. This example has a quiet architectural quality when opened.

Good antique condition with wear to the silk leaf and ribs consistent with age.
